Teresa Baker APY

Teresa Baker Tunkin is a Pitjantjatjara painter from Kanpi in the APY Lands of South Australia. Born in Alice Springs in 1977, she grew up living with her grandparents in Kanpi when the community was still in its early stages of development - there were no houses yet. Her grandfather, the late Jimmy Baker, was one of the most important figures in the early APY Lands painting movement. Teresa later moved to Fregon to live with her mother Kay Baker, also an artist and the current custodian of the Malilu story - a Dreaming Teresa is next in line to inherit. She completed her schooling in Fregon and Adelaide, and after leaving school taught Pitjantjatjara language at a Kanpi school.

Teresa began painting in 2005, taught by her grandfather Jimmy. Her work centres on Malilu, the women's creation figure named for her ancestor. She has been an AGNSW Wynne Prize finalist and is regularly exhibited internationally, including in Switzerland and Texas.

Teresa is married with three children and splits her time between Alice Springs, Kanpi, and her homelands at Watarru.
