Joanne Ken

Joanne Ken is an accomplished artist who was born in Mimili and later moved to Fregon, where she draws inspiration from the waterhole near her hometown in Fregon.

She paints vivid depictions of the "Pupu" (waterhole) and the natural beauty that surrounds it. Joanne is a proud member of her community and her art reflects her deep connection to her cultural heritage. In her paintings, she captures the essence of the waterhole, showcasing its serenity and the surrounding flora and fauna. Joanne's work is a celebration of the natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Minyma Kutjara means "two women" in Pitjantjatjara and refers to an important women’s tjukurpa from the APY Lands. The story follows two sisters travelling across Country, stopping at significant sites where they gathered food, made tools, and shared song and ceremony. Through their journey, the sisters shaped the landscape and passed on women’s law, knowledge and responsibility.

She is pictured with her sister Carolanne Ken and their waterhole Kulara Tjuta, reflecting the close bond they share with their community and the land. Joanne's art is a window into landscapes, inviting viewers to experience its beauty and wonder.
