Contemporary Aboriginal desert painting Sand Dunes Tali by Gwenda Turner Nungurrayi

Gwenda Turner Nungurrayi is a Warlpiri painter from Yuelamu (Mt Allen), north-west of Alice Springs. The daughter of celebrated painter Maureen Hudson Nampijinpa, she has been painting since the age of fifteen - over thirty years of work rooted in the sand dunes and Budgerigar Dreaming of her traditional country Warlukurlangu.

Where many Warlpiri painters use a stick, Gwenda works with bottles - a technique she developed herself that gives her work its signature flowing, wavy lines of precise dots. She paints from instinct, no sketching. "It comes natural."

Her family connections place her at the heart of the Western Desert art movement. Maureen is blood cousins with the late Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri - one of the founding figures of that movement - and Gwenda grew up painting alongside his daughter Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi.
