      Sarrita King Paintings

Sarrita King is a Gurindji and Waanyi artist known for luminous, elemental paintings of the Northern Territory: lightning, fire, water and earth, seen from above. Born in Adelaide in 1988 and raised in Darwin, she has built a career of more than fifteen years and is now one of the most sought-after contemporary Aboriginal artists in Australia. Art by Farquhar is currently the only stockist of Sarrita's artwork in South Australia.

      Who is Sarrita King?

Sarrita King was born in Adelaide in 1988 and grew up in Darwin, on Larrakia Country, where she still lives and paints today. She is the daughter of the late William King Jungala, a respected Gurindji painter, and the younger sister of artist Tarisse King. Sarrita began painting at sixteen, learning alongside her father, and entered the gallery world at a young age, carrying his techniques forward while developing a style that is entirely her own.

Today her work is shown by leading galleries in Australia and overseas, and she serves as an artist director on the board of the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia.

      A family of painters

William King Jungala began painting full time in 1994, combining traditional and contemporary approaches and drawing on the elements of nature. After his passing in 2007, both of his daughters continued to paint, each building a distinct practice from the foundations he gave them. Sarrita and Tarisse King are now two of the best known names in contemporary Aboriginal art, and their work is often collected together.

Through their father, the King sisters are connected to the Gurindji people of the Northern Territory, whose 1966 Wave Hill Walk-Off became a defining moment in the Aboriginal land rights movement in Australia.

      Sarrita King's paintings

Sarrita's paintings are inspired by the Northern Territory landscape and the stories her father shared with her. Using fine dotting, layered lines and radiating forms, she captures the energy of the land in motion: storms breaking over the plains, fire moving across Country, and water spreading through rivers and soaks in the wet season.

      Ngurra

Her Ngurra paintings build dense fields of dots and fine lines into surfaces with real depth and movement, rich in earth tones and natural colour.

      Earth Elements

The Earth Elements series explores water, earth and the changing seasons of the Top End, often with metallic highlights that shift as the light moves across the canvas.

      Lightning, Fire and Water

Among her best known works, these paintings capture the raw power of the elements, with bold contrast and a strong sense of movement.
