Bernadine Johnson Kemarre stands out for her vibrant depictions of bush flowers and bush medicine leaves particularly those found around her homeland of Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa), a remote Aboriginal community southeast of Alice Springs around about 80km. 


Her paintings are a captivating blend of vibrant colours and intricate detail. Her eye-catching style combines traditional Indigenous themes with contemporary techniques, bringing to life the beauty of bush flowers and bush medicine trees. Bernadine comes from a family of famous artists including Abie Loy and Petrick Kemarre from Utopia region in Northern Territory. Bernadine is married to Stephen Martin Petyarre, another artist in the gallery. Stephens sister is Anna Price Petyarre is one of the most sought-after artists from Central Australia. Bernadine learnt from a young age and has become a popular artist through her use of bold colours and precise painting style. These details produce amazing paintings. 

Bush Medicine Trees & Leaves

In her artwork she highlights the importance of the Bush Medicine Tree's and Leaves, a key element in traditional healing practices. often highlight the healing power of bush medicine leaves. These leaves, used for centuries, are boiled for stomach ailments or crushed with Kangaroo fat to treat cuts and burns. Her artwork brings these traditional practices to life, blending rich colour and precise detail to tell the story of bush medicine's enduring role in the community.
