Artwork story
Maureenโs Fire Dreaming is connected to Warlukurlangu, the Bushfire Country associated with her fatherโs family. It is one of the Warlpiri Dreamings passed to her through her fatherโs side.
The publicly documented Warlukurlangu story tells of Lungkarda, an ancestral blue-tongued lizard man, and his two sons. When the sons unknowingly killed a kangaroo sacred to their father, he sent a powerful fire after them. They fled across Country, but the fire followed and eventually overcame them.
The story remains connected to significant places around Yuendumu, including the sites of the hunt, the sonsโ camps and their final journey. Maureenโs painting draws on this inherited Fire Dreaming, carrying the connection between ancestral events, family knowledge and Country.
