Artwork story
Karen Bird Ngale’s paintings bring together women’s ceremony and knowledge of the plants that sustain life on her Anmatyerre Country in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory.
Awelye encompasses women’s ceremonies, including song, dance and ceremonial body painting. Karen learned the stories and cultural responsibilities associated with these ceremonies from senior women.
An important subject in her work is Alpar, the rat-tail plant. Its long flowering spikes give the plant its common name. Traditionally, women gathered its small seeds and ground them to make bread. The Alpar Seed Story connects this food source with knowledge of Country passed between generations.
