Artwork story
Debra inherited the Uwalki Watiya Tjuta Dreaming from her late mother-in-law, Mitjili Napurrula. The two spent long periods painting together, and Mitjili gave Debra permission to paint the story and carry it forward for their grandchildren. After Mitjili’s passing, her family supported Debra in continuing this work.
Watiya Tjuta means many trees. The story is connected to Uwalki, Mitjili’s father’s Country, where trees provided the wood for kulata (spears). Mitjili’s tree forms express the women’s side of this ancestral spear-making story, which her mother taught her by drawing in the sand.
In her Acacia Leaves and Mulga Trees paintings, Debra continues this inherited story in her own way. Her repeated tree and leaf forms suggest the movement she sees in the trees, bringing a sense of wind and motion to the compositions she learned alongside Mitjili.
