Aboriginal Art Switzerland - Collections, Galleries and Buy Online

Switzerland is home to the most important centre for Aboriginal art in Europe. With a world-class dedicated foundation in the Swiss Alps and a serious private collector community, Switzerland has become one of the most significant destinations outside Australia for experiencing contemporary Aboriginal art. Here is a guide to Aboriginal art in Switzerland.

Fondation Opale - Lens/Crans-Montana

Fondation Opale in Lens, Canton of Valais, is the only contemporary art centre in Europe dedicated exclusively to the promotion of Aboriginal art. Founded in 2018 and located at 1,140 metres in the Swiss Alps with views of the surrounding mountains, the foundation is built on the Collection Berengere Primat - one of the largest private collections of contemporary Aboriginal art in the world, holding more than 1,700 works by nearly 350 artists. Fondation Opale presents major temporary exhibitions across 1,200 square metres of gallery space, drawing connections between Aboriginal art and contemporary art from around the world. Its program includes exhibitions, artist talks, workshops, residencies and academic research. Every exhibition is accompanied by a published catalogue.

Teresa Baker at Fondation Opale

APY Lands artist Teresa Baker, one of the most significant painters working in Australia today, has been featured in multiple exhibitions at Fondation Opale. Her work appeared in INTERSTELLAR, a major group exhibition developed in collaboration with artgeneve that brought together around sixty works by Aboriginal and international artists exploring humanity's relationship with the universe. She also featured in Nothing Too Beautiful for the Gods, a 2024-2025 exhibition curated by Jean-Hubert Martin that examined the connections between art and spirituality across cultures. Teresa Baker was born in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and grew up in Kanpi on the APY Lands, learning her craft from her grandfather, the revered artist Jimmy Baker. Her work is held in major public and private collections across Australia and internationally.

Art Basel - Basel

Art Basel is the world's most important contemporary art fair, held annually in Basel. Aboriginal artists and specialist galleries have presented works at Art Basel, bringing Aboriginal painting to the attention of some of the most serious collectors and curators in the world. The fair's international reach has played a meaningful role in establishing Aboriginal art within the global contemporary art market.
