Aboriginal Art in Darwin - Galleries, Museums and Buy Online

Darwin is Australia's closest major city to the source of much of the country's most significant Aboriginal art. As the gateway to the Top End and within reach of communities across the Northern Territory, it holds a unique place in the story of Australian Indigenous art. Here is a guide to where you can view and experience Aboriginal art in the city.

Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT)

Located on picturesque Fannie Bay, MAGNT is the Territory's premier cultural institution and holds one of Australia's finest collections of Aboriginal art. Each year from around August to November, MAGNT hosts the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards - one of the most prestigious Indigenous art prizes in the country, established in 1984 to recognise and promote the diversity and quality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.

Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF)

Every August, Darwin becomes the centre of the Aboriginal art world with the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair. Held at the Darwin Convention Centre, the fair brings together artists and art centres from across Australia - in 2026 celebrating its 20th year. One hundred percent of all art sales go directly back to the art centres and their communities, making it one of the most ethical and direct ways to purchase Aboriginal art anywhere in the country.

Charles Darwin University - Midpul Art Gallery

The Midpul Art Gallery at Charles Darwin University's CBD campus presents exhibitions from Northern Territory artists across a range of mediums, with a strong focus on Aboriginal art and cultural practice from across the Top End and Central Australia.
