Exploring the Vibrant Dreamtime of Maureen Nampijinpa Hudson's "Sand Dunes"
Maureen Nampijinpa Hudson's captivating artwork "Sand Dunes" draws its inspiration from the breathtaking landscape that defines her hometown in Yuelamu the old Mt Allen Pastoral located to the Northwest of Alice Springs in the Tanami Region. These sand dunes, known as "Tali" in most Central Australian Aboriginal language groups.
As an Elder of her community Maureen knows the landscape well, gaining an intimate understanding of its nuances and secrets. Maureen possess a wealth of knowledge about places that provide sustenance, water sources, healing remedies, and refuge. This deep connection to the land is a cherished aspect of Indigenous culture, passed down from one generation to the next as a valuable inheritance.
The story has even been passed down to her daughters Gwenda Turner Nungarrayi and Julieanne Turner Nungarrayi who will continue to pass on the Dreamtime Story for years to come. As well as grandson Farron Furber Jampitjinpa who paints colourful and vibrant landscapes of the country.
Maureen's "Sand Dunes" artworks not only captures the physical beauty of this landscape but also pays homage to the profound spiritual and cultural significance it holds for her and her community. Through her art, Maureen invites viewers to immerse themselves in the timeless allure of the sand dunes and to appreciate the enduring connection between Indigenous peoples and their ancestral lands. Her style is always evolving and she finds new ways the share the Dreamtime Story using various techniques with dotting sticks and paint brushes.
The spaces between these sand dunes are teeming with life, offering fertile ground for a variety of edible plants, medicines, and wildlife. Yet, other areas may appear barren, depending on factors such as water availability and soil quality. The towering height of these sand dunes often obscures the view, creating a sense of mystery about what lies beyond each hill.
One her most stunning and outstanding pieces is located on display at our Glenelg Gallery. Currently as a scroll which measures 200cm x 127cm this piece would make a statement piece for any room. Maureen has used soft pinks, oranges, creams and purples to create this stunning piece.
