Collection: Debra Nangala McDonald

Debra Nangala McDonald is a distinguished Pintupi artist from Papunya, born in 1969 at Papunya Camp, approximately 240 km west of Alice Springs. She is the granddaughter of Shorty Lungkata Tjungurrayi, a founding member of the Papunya painting movement and a highly respected elder. Debra continues his legacy through her paintings, which carry deep cultural meaning and strong connections to Country.
Her mother, Martha McDonald, and aunties Linda Syddick Napaltjarri and Wentja Napaltjarri are also acclaimed artists, placing Debra within one of the most respected artistic families of the Western Desert. Through marriage, she became closely associated with Mitjili Napurrula, whose Mulga Tree Dreaming she now paints as its custodian.
Debra’s works draw on sacred stories from her grandfather’s country at Lake MacDonald, including Uwalki Watiya Tjuta (Acacia or Mulga Tree), Goanna Love Story, and other Women’s Dreaming narratives. Her compositions are known for bold shapes, striking negative space, and distinctive use of red oxide backgrounds that enhance her vibrant palette.
